As I recall sometimes roudy Marines go up into the park to celebrate New Years Eve. There was one incident even of Joshua Trees being burned in a huge campfire at Split Rock.......at least I think it was at New Years Eve, but may have been some other more random time. Still, I'm thinking you'll find a space, because most will not want to camp in the cold of winter. Take lots of firewood!
And, yes, DO let us know if you do chance it. Perhaps the rangers at 29 Palms can give you a better idea of your odds of getting a space?
