All I know is that, after Oh-Bay-Yo, it was built by 29 Palms teens as an overnight stop on their way to go swimming at Barker Dam etc. Apparently it took a while to discover the route as being easier than going up 49 Palms Canyon. I'm no longer in touch with Delcey Voncannon, retired, who taught anthropology at the Joshua Tree branch of Copper Mt. College. If she knows more, I can't recall hearing it. You might inquire through the 29 Palms JTNP ranger station. A couple of the rangers that work through there are local history buffs.
