I often encourage people to do such things as explore the Wonderland of Rocks freely.
However, its very possible to get disoriented in such places, and I've found myself
walking out in the dark by flashlight more than once. Experienced day-hikers know what
to carry in case the unexpected happens. Besides the items listed below, in the desert, if
you are out in the backcountry during the warmer months, and it would take more than
an hour or so to scramble to the nearest hospital, I say make sure you have a snake-bite
kit handy. Thankfully I've never had to use one!
